Famous Russian Personalities in Heidelberg

In the nineteenth century, Heidelberg became an intellectual mecca for Russian scientists and writers, among them the chemist and composer Alexander Borodin and the poet, playwright and author Ivan Turgenev. The particular warmth and vivacity of the Russian scholars made a vivid impression on colleagues and students alike. The townspeople spoke of today’s Friedrich-Ebert- Anlage as “the Russian Allée.”
